Middle Minoan I pottery in central and east Crete
One would think that the MC and MH sequences would have much to gain from establishing synchronisms with the Cretan MM sequence, given the latter’s many sub-phases established by Evans. Despite some serious attempts at revision, this remains true, with Evans’ system largely intact. However, a lack of publication of key deposits, coupled with a failure to grasp the extent of regional variation, has led to uncertainty in some quarters. In this paper I shall attempt to address this uncertainty by presenting material from new deposits on the verge of publication, and by adopting a regional perspective. My focus will be on the MM IA and IB phases as represented at sites in central and east Crete , such as Knossos , Malia, Myrtos Pyrgos and Palaikastro. Dr Carl Knappett ( University of Exeter )
