BLACK AND RED LUSTROUS WHEEL-MADE WARES FROM TELL EL-CAJJUL

The excavations at Tell el- cAjjul during the 1930s which were directed by F. Petrie produced likely representatives of the “Lustrous Wheel-made” group. Representatives of this ceramic group were identified during the renewed excavation at the site. However, the context and ware descriptions in Petrie’s publications are problematic, and definite conclusions are only possible through the study of the actual finds and the comparison with the new stratigraphy. The revision of Petrie’s stratigraphical and chronological conclusions is one of the objectives of a current research project which, inter alia, deals with the programming of the “MontAjjul” database. An additional problem is the location of the finds from Petrie’s excavations which are distributed all over the world: finds could be traced, for example, in collections Great Britain , Israel , USA , Australia , Japan and elsewhere. The present state of research is presented.
