A Seldom Used Parameter in Pottery Studies: the Capacity of Pottery Vessels
Jean-Paul Thalmann

It is widely recognized that the capacity of vessels is a parameter of paramount importance, especially in functional studies of pottery. It is however very seldom used , just because, while a simple operation in its principle, accurately estimating the capacity of a vessel from the corresponding drawing requires tedious measurements and calculations. An example of some results obtained using this parameter will be presented, as well as a home-made computer utility to calculate capacities from drawings of pottery. Interested conference participants may take it back home at no cost: it is a "Friendware" (PC and Mac versions: please bring three 1.44Mb floppies).
